Howlers have an extended hyoid or
voice box that expands to almost three
times the size when he howls.
HABITAT Primary and
Secondary forest. They are found in
the coastal forest of Eastern Brazil.
SOCIAL STRUCTURE Variable, 1
male – multifemale, 2 male –
multifemale or multimale groups.
In the multimale groups the bachelors
go out and try to dominate a male
for his females. Group sizes range
from 6 individuals to 11.
BEHAVIOR Diurnal and
arboreal.
The brown howler decends from trees
to drink from streams. The entire
group will engage in grooming although
the females groom the most. This species
will never recline while eating. If
they are not sitting upright then
they are hanging from the branches
suspended by at least three limbs.
Mothers do not look after their own
babies but hand that resposiblilty
to another female in the group.
ASSOCIATION They are sympatric
with Woolly Spider Monkeys.
MATING Brown howlers
engage in tongue flicking as display
of sexual intentions.
TERRITORIAL MARKING Brown Howlers
mark their territory vocally in the
late afternoon.
SCENT MARKING This species
does not obviously scent mark.
VOCALIZATIONS The Brown Howler
is the loudest land mammal and can
be heard for up to 7 km. He does this
to mark his territory and does very
little other volcalising.
THREATS TO THE SPECIES Howlers are
hunted for their meat, fur and voice
box. The voice box is used as water
carriers and hand bags. It is believed
that if you drink the blood that runs
through the voice box you will have
a beautiful singing voice and will
experience painless births.
