Black and White Colobus monkeys are

HABITAT Primary and
Secondary lowland to montane forest.
Angola, Zaire, Rwanda, Burundi, Zambia,
Kenya, Tanzania.
LIFE HISTORY Black and White
Colobus Monkeys reach sexual maturity
at about 4 years of age. They will
have their first offspring between
the ages of 4-5 years. They will have
a single offspring, which will be
born completely white. They will have
young every two years.
SOCIAL STRUCTURE Variable. 1
male – multifemale, multimale
– multifemale. Groups with up
to 5 males. In Rwanda groups have
been to form large aggregations of
up to 300 individuals. The average
group size is 16.
BEHAVIOR Diurnal and
Arboreal. This species prefers the
upper canopy and emerging trees, although
they occasionally come to the ground
to feed. The interaction and grooming
between group members is minimal.
ASSOCIATION This species
associates with blue monkeys. Mixed
species groups are found mainly in
Zaire. Red-tailed guenons, wolf guenons
and black Mangabeys have been sighted
forming these groups.
SCENT MARKINGS There is no
apparent form of scent marking.
VOCALIZATIONS During a predator
threat the male will jump and let
out a roar until his group has successfully
fled.
THREATS
TO THE SPECIES The major problem
facing this species is poaching. They
were and are extensively hunted for
their beautiful coats. These are made
into wall hangings and sold as souvenirs.
